A store coupon is a store-issued saving tied to a specific item, order, and time window. It worked yesterday but will not apply today most often because it expired overnight, was already redeemed, or your item or cart no longer meets the terms. Digital coupons are especially time-sensitive, including short-window and weekly-deal codes. A small change in size, flavor, quantity, account, or cart total can also block the same code.

Did the offer expire overnight?
Many coupons end at midnight, so yesterday's valid code can be invalid this morning. The Federal Trade Commission warns that only a tiny share of manufacturer coupons have no expiration date, as explained in the FTC warning about coupon expiration dates. Target says it automatically removes expired Circle bonuses, coupons, and rebates from search results and saved lists.
That is why a saved offer can vanish between visits. Check the expiration date, start date, and weekly-deal window first. If the date passed, the store system will reject the code even when everything else matches.
Have you already used this coupon?
Many store digital coupons are single-use or one-per-household. A second try will not apply after the first redemption consumed the offer. Kroger states that digital coupons are downloadable and redeemable one time per household unless noted, as described in the Kroger digital coupon guidelines.
Kroger also limits shoppers to one store or manufacturer coupon per item. It accepts only digital coupons issued through its app or website and enforces manufacturer restrictions. Look for "already clipped," "already redeemed," or "limit reached" messages. Check other household members' accounts when the offer is one-per-household.
Does your item match exactly?
An item mismatch blocks redemption when brand, size, quantity, flavor, color, or eligible product does not match the coupon description. Target's coupon policy requires that level of exact match, according to the Target coupon policy article. This happens easily with multipacks, trial sizes, nearby flavors, and similar colors.
A coupon for 12 ounces will not apply to 8 ounces, even from the right brand. Open the coupon details and compare each word against the product page. Replace the cart item with the listed variety, size, and quantity before trying again.
Does your cart and code still qualify?
Cart-level conditions cause failures when the order misses a minimum subtotal, contains excluded categories, uses an existing account for a new-customer code, or carries a typo or extra space. Rakuten's troubleshooting guide lists those same cart and entry problems, as explained in the Rakuten promo-code troubleshooting guide.
Retailers may also accept, refuse, or limit any coupon. Promotions can end early or become unavailable, so identical carts can behave differently across days, stores, or accounts. Run these quick checks before checkout:.
- Recheck dates, quantity, exclusions, and account eligibility in the fine print.
- Delete and retype the code to remove spaces or mixed-up characters.
- Confirm the subtotal after discounts, tax, and fees meets the minimum.
- Try one qualifying item alone to separate an item problem from a cart problem.
