Target Deals Mistakes: Exclusions and Expiration Rules People Miss

Learn which Target rewards expire, what the Circle Card skips, and when price matches fail so you keep every discount.

The most costly Target mistakes are letting rewards expire and assuming a deal covers every item. Target Circle, Target's rewards program for members, sets a one-year deadline on Circle Rewards and limits where bonuses work. Shoppers miss savings when they forget expiration dates or skip exclusion lists. A quick check of dates and terms before checkout preserves most discounts.

Why do Circle Rewards disappear?

Target Help says Circle members must redeem Circle Rewards within one year or lose them, as detailed in Target's Circle Rewards explanation. You apply them in-store or online toward a future purchase. Members who add birth date before their birthday receive a 5% birthday reward, redeemable through the app Wallet or target.com/circle dashboard for 30 days.

Check the Wallet tab or target.com/circle for each reward's expiration date and channel. The listing shows whether a Bonus works in-store, online, or both, plus item and use limits. Printed-barcode Bonuses turn invalid after expiration or cancellation, so verify before printing.

What does the 5% Circle Card skip?

Target Help limits the Target Circle Card 5% discount to eligible Target store and Target.com purchases, as described in Target's Circle Card guide. It skips these charges: Shoppers miss this rule with pharmacy pickups and gift-card stock-ups. Pay another way for those items and save the Circle Card for eligible merchandise.

  • prescriptions and CVS pharmacy, clinic visits, and Optical exams
  • Target, prepaid, and betting gift cards
  • 360 memberships, wireless deposits, gift wrap, taxes, shipping, and fees
  • alcohol purchases in Indiana

When do sale prices and gift-card deals shift?

Target Help notes that Target.com sale prices run Sunday through Saturday unless stated otherwise. They end at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Pricing, promotions, and availability vary by location and online. Free Target GiftCard-with-purchase promotions exclude items sold and shipped by Target Plus third-party partners. Home-shipped gift cards arrive separately from the order. For pickup orders, the gift card ships after you pick up the qualifying item.

Why do Target Plus price matches fail?

Target Help allows a Target Plus price match within 14 days with the original receipt, as stated in Target's Target Plus price-match rules. The match covers the identical partner item at a lower valid Target.com price. Target Plus items cannot match to Target-sold items.

You also lose the match when you combine it with excluded offers. Target Help blocks matches using Circle Bonuses, gift-card offers, registry or Target coupons, rebates, and preorders. It also blocks clearance, closeout, liquidation, damaged, used, open, or refurbished items, plus minimum-purchase and bundled deals. Request the match with your original receipt before day 14 ends.
