back-to-school savings come from state tax holidays, verified student and teacher discounts, and college tech bundles. Each offer has its own price limits, eligibility checks, and deadlines that run into September.
A sales-tax holiday is a short window when a state removes sales tax from qualifying items. Early comparison matters because about one-third of shoppers had started browsing and buying by early June 2026, according to the National Retail Federation, the highest early-start share since it began asking in 2018. Total planned spending is also higher, with NRF/Prosper projecting $146.8 billion for K-12 and college combined in a July 1-8 survey of 7,677 consumers, as reported in the back-to-school spending report.

Do state tax holidays cover your list?
Florida's 2026 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday runs July 20 through August 20, 2026. According to the Florida Department of Revenue, it exempts qualifying clothing, school supplies and electronics within price limits from state and local tax, as detailed in the Florida sales-tax holiday guide. Illinois runs a shorter window, August 7-16, 2026. According to Illinois Department of Revenue Schedule K-12 instructions, it lowers state tax on qualifying clothing over a $125 threshold while school supplies have no threshold.
Retailers use the rules when filing August returns, so your receipt should show the reduced state tax. Ask three questions before you shop a holiday. Does your state include your item category. Does the price fall inside the limit. Does the purchase date fall inside the holiday window.
Which teacher and student offers need proof?
Target's 2026 Teacher Prep Event gives verified teachers and college students one-time 20% off one storewide Target Circle purchase from July 5 to Sept. 12, 2026, according to Target Corp. The offer is stackable with Circle offers but requires verification, as described in the Target back-to-school savings announcement. Target also offers verified teachers and college students 50% off a one-year Target Circle 360 membership through Sept.
13, according to Target Corp. That lowers same-day delivery cost to about $49 for the first year versus $99 regular. Best Buy has no universal student coupon code. According to Tom's Guide and Lifewire, savings now come through the free My Best Buy Student Deals hub with rotating education deals, available only while enrolled at an accredited school.
- Are you a verified K-12 teacher or an enrolled college student.
- Have you completed the required ID check before checkout.
- Will you use the one-time Target discount on your largest basket.
What will college tech really cost?
Apple's 2026 U.S. College Student Offer ends Sept. 24, 2026. According to Macworld and Apple reporting, it adds a $150 gift card with an eligible MacBook Pro and $100 with a MacBook Air, iPad Pro or iPad Air, on top of $50-$200 education discounts, as listed in the Apple back-to-school sale breakdown. iPhones remain full price from $1,199.
Eligibility is tighter than in past years. Since May 8, 2026, Apple's U.S. Education Store requires UNiDAYS verification with school email, ID or homeschool letter, according to MacDailyNews and Apple. Parents qualify only when buying for higher-education students. If you cannot pass verification, plan on the regular price.
When should you start buying?
Start with the fixed deadlines, then work backward. Florida ends August 20, Illinois ends August 16, Target's 20% purchase ends September 12, Target Circle 360 half-price ends September 13, and Apple's gift-card bundle ends September 24. Missing a cutoff removes that saving completely.
Use the NRF pattern as a budget warning. Electronics, shoes and dorm decor are driving the jump from $128.2 billion in 2025 to $146.8 billion in 2026. Those are also the categories where waiting for the last week raises stockout risk.
- List school-required items first, then dorm and tech wants.
- Match each item to one saving path: tax holiday, verified discount, or gift-card bundle.
- Buy tax-holiday items inside the holiday and verified tech before September 24.
